Henry Terrell Howard Jr. (Boe) was born in Auburn, Alabama on September 5, 1942 to Henry and Juanita Howard. He was the eldest of four children; brothers William (Rosa) (who preceded him in death) and Kenneth (Cheryl) and sister Helen. Boe graduated from St. Emma Military Academy in 1960 and went on to attend his beloved Tuskegee Institute where he majored in Architecture. He was always interested in furthering his education and keeping his mind sharp so he took many courses at various schools throughout his entire life.
Boe entered into active duty of the United States Navy in 1963 where he held the rank of Draftsman. He did his duty and served his country until he was honorably released from active duty in 1984. During his service he received various awards and commendations. Boe continued his career with the Navy in a reserve capacity and retired as Illustrator Draftsman First Class in 1993.
Boe married Barbara Ridley in 1968 and from their union had two daughters, Denise Yvette and Terri Annette, whom he cherished dearly. He was a loving and devoted father who always taught his girls how to have fun and be independent. He loved the outdoors, music, and ingenuity which passed onto his girls. Boe took them fishing, camping and to the beach every chance he got. His famous motto fishing was "you catch it, you clean it" so his girls grew up appreciating hard work and following through on everything.
Unfortunately, Boe and Barbara's union didn't last and Boe lost his way for a while battling demons only him and God could defeat. He found comfort and support in a Narcotics Anonymous (NA) group in San Diego and began living again. After he recovered, he devoted many years to the organization being a mentor, counselor and friend to those in need of finding their way back too. He spoke at many engagements and was proud to share his experiences in order to help others.
Boe had six grandchildren that he loved greatly and would do anything for. From Denise - Trevor D., Desiree I., and Brandon J.; and from Terri (Joel Erskin) - Tyree A. (step), Carter A., and Kendall P. He also had a host of nieces & nephews, grand-nieces & grand-nephews and other family and friends that touched his life.
Boe has gone home and is in a better place now. He is with God and his other family members on a sandy beach, with a fishing pole in one hand and an unpublished James Patterson book in the other watching the San Diego Chargers playing in the Super Bowl.
"I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love."
- Leo Buscaglia
