Dorothy June Franks passed away on Tuesday, August 12 at 5pm in Redlands Community Hospital. She passed peacefully, and was surrounded by her loved ones and family. June was preceded in death by her mother and father, Milton and Rosemary Hardy. She is survived by her sister Jo Rea Hardy of Highland, brother Bo Hardy, of Garland, TX, and 3 sons, Joseph and John Franks of Redlands, and James Franks of Salem, OR.
June was born in Mesa, AZ on June 5, 1948. She traveled with her family to the California desert in the mid 50's. She graduated from Twentynine Palms High School in 1966 and went on to start a family with James J. Franks, her fellow classmate and sweetheart. "Jim and June", as they were known, had their 3 children and moved to Redlands in 1970. The young family first rented a small house on High St. near Sylvan Park, and in 1972 bought what would be June's only home for the remainder of her life. It is on Laramie Street between Judson and Lincoln. A single mother by 1976, June started her working life as a bartender and waitress at The Branding Iron in San Bernardino, then The Tartan in Redlands. History was made the following year when she became one of the first women ever hired to do "Men's work" at the California Portland Cement plant in Colton. She worked at the cement plant full time for roughly 10 years. She then moved on to a life of antiques, buying and selling for the next 20 years. June fell in love with the antique world and had good friends and valued customers all over the Inland Empire. Always wearing a smile, June became well known as a fair and knowledgeable negotiator, and she was always a consummate professional. She retired in the mid 2000's and spent the rest of her days being a loving Mother to her sons, and a constant beacon of personal strength and endurance to her 7 grandkids, and 7 great-grandkids.
