Benjamin Floyd Koorenny

June 12, 1933 - December 24, 2021

Benjamin Floyd Koorenny passed away on December 24, 2021. Floyd is survived by his wife of 67 years, Patricia Koorenny and his four children: Kevin Koorenny, Karen Lawson (George), Kathy Koorenny (Bruce Nobles) and Mark Koorenny. Donna LeFore, Floyd’s sister, is the last remaining sibling of his family. Floyd is also survived by seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on January 7, 2022 at the Redlands Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Private interment will be on a later date at Hillside Memorial Park in Redlands. Floyd was born in North Dakota on June 12, 1933, the tenth of eleven children of Abraham and Mary Trihub Koorenny, first generation Russian immigrants who settled in North Dakota. Floyd spent much of his childhood in College Place, Washington. Floyd attended San Pasqual Academy, and graduated from Walla Walla College Academy, Glendale City College, and Eastern Washington College. He married Patricia, his co-worker from the bakery at San Pasqual Academy, and they built their life together. Floyd spent his career working for the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and its various schools: Monterrey Bay Academy, Pacific Union College, and Loma Linda University. He retired as a trust officer for Loma Linda University. Floyd was a man of great faith. He loved God, his family, the Redlands Seventh-Day Adventist Church, and baseball. He was a lifelong baseball fan, and regularly despaired when the Los Angeles (Anaheim) Angels failed to achieve their full potential. In his earlier years, through the age of 50, he was a softball pitcher of some renown, with several no- hitters in his career as a pitcher for numerous community leagues, in Angwin, the Napa Valley and Loma Linda. Floyd enjoyed photography, stamp collecting, and his grove of fruit trees. His persimmon and pomegranate trees were carefully tended, and he generously shared his harvest. Later in life, he became the sole supporter of several dozen hummingbirds who visited his feeders daily. He took great joy in his children, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his cats. Floyd always found resources to help people and animals in need. He believed strongly in education and in Christian education specifically. Floyd and Patricia devoted much of their worldly resources to enabling Christian education for their family. The words of the apostle Paul as he contemplated the end of his life are applicable to Floyd’s life: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith…there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me…. 2 Timothy 4:7.
